TVHA SAYS RELAX

I thought we were going to have weeks of uninterrupted studio time to work on our new recording Post Traumatic Love but as fate would have it summer has arrived and with it some exciting shows for us.

Saturday July 23rd we play an outdoor Cancer Fundraiser in Maple Ridge at around 4pm then we rush off stage and drive to New Westminster to play for 14 000 people at the 22nd Annual FraserFest on the quay boardwalk!

Saturday July 28th we’re very excited to be back at Venue in Vancouver with locals Low Spin and our pals from Calgary Secret Broadcast.

And finally we play a free outdoor afternoon show in AUGUST with details TBA soon…

And of course in between rehearsal days and being fancy lads we’re getting closer to completing our new recording.

an update…

After recording our drums at the legendary Mushroom Studios here in Vancouver we took that hard drive and headed for the hills. Well maybe not the hills but a secret home studio deep in the pit of Pitt Meadows. Surrounded by trees and row upon row of suburban homes we tracked loud guitars, quiet guitars, tambourines, shakers, wooden blocks, percussive group vocal chants, and everything in between. For me it was a trip back to my childhood, a chance to decompress from the downtown city life and let the creative juices bubble up from different parts. As this recordings character grows every song is becoming special in their own way and very different from each other. At first I was a little frightened that some songs strayed too far from what we’ve done in the past but really in the end isn’t that just going to make this a more exciting time? The journey is not over yet. There’s much work to be done before we can take these songs in to be mixed. Attention spans are short and two years (or more) between releases is a long time but I’ve learned to except the natural progression of how things unfold artistically for TVHA. Thanks to the incredible support and I hope you can all hang in there with us. In the meantime you can hear these new songs live at one of our shows this summer!

This Monday Feb 28th TVHA hit Mushroom Studios to lay down the drum tracks for their upcoming album Post Traumatic Love. Scene in the Dark will be there to document the occasion so keep an eye peeled for upcoming footage. Judging by the leaked demos the new songs dive deeper into the post-punk/new wave side of the bands sound and promise to showcase some new sonic layers.

Your next chance to hear some of these new songs will be at Joe’s Apartment on Granville right here in Vancouver Saturday April 2nd. Check out the show poster by artist Robert Edmonds.

In the fine print above you will find our name. It’s no typo- We have an all ages show (always a good time, kids rock the hardest!), FEBRUARY 19th here in Van City at The Van Alpen Club. There are 12 bands in total playing from noon until 1 am. Yours truly will be on somewhere in the early evening/late afternoon. Need tix? Follow the links above…

New Album Details Emerge…

If you made it out last Thursday to the Forum, you may have noticed a plethora of new tunes in the TVHA set. After almost three years of writing, recording, releasing, and touring ‘Lost in the Sway’, we have decided to do it all over again with a new vision, a new sound, and a new album (our third) to represent this wave of inspiration. For all you fans out there (new and old) we look forward to sharing this experience with you every step of the way.

Over the next few weeks we will be completing the final steps of pre-production on what is shaping up to be another long EP (I say that hesitantly only because 6 songs is an EP, however, you never know what can happen in the end, especially if you read my next segment…). Where are we recording and with whom? When’s the release date? Next Tour?! What’s the album gonna be called? Who is producing? First Single?

Jamie Lidell “Compass” – This England native is one of my particular favorites, if not my top of 2010. Fairly unknown, this motown inspired, beat boxing, soul rocker will stand the test of time. Beck apparently fought with Feist for the rights to do this album with Lidell and came out the victor. The end product is some of the best ear candy in the sugar shop- dirty percussion, amazing melodies, and a voice that is mature, and stylish to boot…a sure panty remover

Kanye West “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Family”
If you’re ever around me, or over, you’ll hear this playing in the background. Yep, Kanye did it again. In my eyes and ears he’s raised the bar for hip hop. Going back to more agressive, dark, and raw rapping rather than all the voice affected singing is a treat for me. The title track and “monster” are two of the best hip hop tracks I’ve heard in a while. The stable of artists that Kanye has recently been keeping are among the brightest and talented of the last decade on the hip-hop side of things. With Jay-Z, Kid Cudi, (and not to mention my favorite artist so far in my lifetime, Mos Def) leading the way, I predict a lot more hits to come.
Ps…..I’m jacked for the upcoming Mos Def album produced by Kanye on his label.
Pps….also jacked for the new “Strokes” album, just saying….

Arcade Fire “The Suburbs”
The best balanced and produced band of the year. I don’t think I need to say much as this album speaks for itself. Anyone fortunate enough to see them live have realized they’ve gone to a whole new level since their last record. Their approach with the multiple release of singles right before the album release was a gold mine of an idea for future bands to use as a template. Solid band. Timeless album.

MGMT “Congratulations”
Finally a band that is really breaking mold who is still popular in everyones eyes and not losing integrity on the way. Stylistically they are giving reason to bring back the genre “psychedelic”. I was lucky enough to be front and center in Vancouver to see them and they blew my fucking mind. I’ll never forget that show. These guys are layered with talent, style, ideas, and tempo changes…..I love it. I’m sure they’ll blow me away this upcoming year again. “Congratulations” is also one of those timeless albums that will forever be a favorite.

The National “High Violet”
This was a no brainer. Heart breaking lyrics, emotional melodies and tones, and one of the most mature voices in the industry. “Lemonworld” made me cry the first time I heard it and I’m not ashamed to say it. Poetically, he’s someone I strive to be like. Enough said.

Art’s Top Five Albums of 2010

1) Twin Shadow “FORGET”

Tapping into a scene that some would consider “so 2004″, Twin Shadow put a twist on the much revival-ed 80′s album sound. With a crooning voice thats 1 part Morrisey, 1 part Bowie, and 1 part pompadour- George Lewis Jr. is destined to be a rock star in this modern world full of bashfully earnest indie musicians. No offense- I just dig it!

2) New Young Pony Club “”THE OPTIMIST”

I love female lead singers! That is, when they have swagger, or sing like they have a dick (Debby Harry being an exception). Case in point with NYPC lead vocalist Tahita Bulmer. She is a deadringer for Romeo Void’s Debora Lyall as she sarcastically taunts her way through The Optimist’s 11 songs of post punk infused electro rock. I was turned on to this album via osmosis, which is to say they were everywhere, and it wasn’t until I sat down for a serious listen that I was completely blown away.

3) MGMT “CONGRATULATIONS”

After seeing them play the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver this year, I can safely say they’re ‘my shit’. That is to say- weird, catchy, and experimentally balanced. If I could make the perfect MGMT playlist it would consist of tracks on both MGMT records. Unfortunately for me, they released them in two halves and added some filler to round out the track listing. The best songs on Congratulations standout over time, and the production of the record is the most progressive major label release I’ve heard in years, maybe to a fault. Even still, they’re one of my fave new bands to come out recently, and prove that the album is an ambitious yet dying form of art.

4) Arcade Fire “SUBURBS”

With a new hair cut, and more songs about neighborhoods he grew up in- Win Butler gave me another taste of the brilliance in the Arcade Fire’s musical prowess. Seeing them live is the closest I will ever come to attending church…if “attending church” meant witnessing a spiritual-god-like rock and roll performance, witnessed among 15,000 screaming (and crying, and singing, and rejoicing) fanatics. Hearing them on record is no less a similar experience (insert that feeling in your gut upon hearing “Funeral” for the first time…). Seeing them perform live, well that’s a different “Top 5″ list all together.

Art’s Fave Track: “Rococo” tied with “The Sprawl #2: Mountains beyond Mountains”

5) Tame Impala “INNERPSEAKER“

I love albums that sound like they were recorded in another era, a different time, or a different style than what is being done right now. Music trends come and go but good songs are good songs and are not to be out dated by modern technology. Tame Impala are a good example of this statement. They not only sound like they come from the 1960′s, but they look like it too! This record is great in the summer time. It sounds great on a road trip. It sounds great exactly how they intended it to be: live and hallucinogenic.

Honorable Mentions: “Man on The Moon II” – Kid Cudi, “Grinderman 2“- Grinderman, “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy“- Kanye West, “This is Happening“- LCD Soundsystem, and so much more!

Jason’s Top Five Albums of 2010

Ok. Here it is. There were many releases I liked as well but for the sake of this blog I’m going with these five.

Spoon – Transference

They’ve taken a sideways approach to the Spoon formula with off kilter arrangements and textures that showcase the band in a different light than their previous releases. I already liked the band but Transference solidified my respect for them as recording artists.

Dearhunter – Halcyon Digest

Different than their last release Microcastles in that the heavier electric guitars and synths have been replaced with acoustic guitars and saxophone(?). This band has an aesthetic that grows on you the more you listen.

Grinderman – 2

Nick Cave and his droogs kill it on this exciting blues psych rocker. So exciting to hear something so bad ass coming from this seasoned group of evil doers.

Arcade Fire – The Suburbs

You too? Of course. I tried to discount this one but the songs are just too good. I grew up in a suburb too ya’ know.

New Young Pony Club – The Optimist

This album has been getting mixed reviews(mostly not good ones) for switching gears with their sound. I heard Romeo Void in her voice and I was hooked. The unexpected vocal melodies and bass lines alone are worth the price of admission. I know this might be on Art’s list too but I just had to mention it.

Honorable Mention: LCD Soundsystem, Caribou, MGMT, and Broken Social Scene. Sure I’m forgetting even more great albums.

And there were other new ‘old’ rediscoveries this year that made the rounds on the laptop. Roxy Music, Altered Images, Neu!, Kraftwerk, The Fall, etc etc etc…
